The Off Licence

The Off Licence is a party, podcast mix series, and blog focused on bringing the best in electronic music to our vibrant city.

Our ethos is to represent artists on their debut in Leeds, or even in the UK.

Ben Etherington

The Off Licences resident pint hogger & co founder, he is named after his favourite thing. Free Beers.

Getting his first delicious taste of Leeds vibrant music scene from fellow students & tutors at Leeds College of Music, his eclectic record bag stretches from George Benson to Lutz, afrobeat to electro, a bit of everything and anything that sounds weird & wonderful.

Over the years Free Beers has held down multiple residences over a range of different genres & nights such as Gypsy Carrot Productions, Schwein & Bad Ornament, The Off Licence, and a couple of years hosting a funk based radio show on Manchester based Fab Radio International.

Chris Kitchen

Chris Kitchen has been a prolific DJ on the Leeds scene for over a decade. He was part of the Schwein collective playing regularly at venues such as Wire, Distrikt and 212. Chris also produces music as part of the duo Kitchens Inc. with his brother Marcus Kitchen. The pair have had releases on long standing label 3am Recordings, Odour Recordings and have an upcoming release on new Leeds label Hideous Things. All round top geezer!

LXK

Our chief wine taster, and co founder. Say hello to LXK.

As a DJ he mixes a range of contempory electronic music, selecting choice cuts from techno, electro and acid labels of old and new.

Cutting his teeth in his home town of Blackburn and later playing bars in Headingley, he soon gained a residency for the Leeds based night Schwein, as well as sets at UK festival Beatherder on consecutive years.

Roya Brehl

Roya Brehl is a Leeds-based DJ and producer, playing a plethora of deep electronic sounds. As a co-founder and resident at the Schwein parties, Roya played regularly at Wire and other respected venues across the city. Along with three previous Schwein residents, she is now part of The Off Licence.

Roya also participated in the Internal Connections Livestream event hosted by Leftback during the 2020 lockdowns as part of the UK crew and the Shelter Me livestream, which raised money to help the homeless.

Recently, Roya joined the lineup for Structure, a new night with its launch in Leeds on September 17th. Roya has also been part of a release on Hummingbird by BPZ , with a remix on the Black Tar Sands Remix compilation.

Outside of Leeds, Roya Brehl has been a guest at various venues and festivals across the UK, with frequent gigs over the past year supporting Paisley Dark founder John Paynter and Subterranea’s Rory Flynn. Nowadays, you can catch Roya playing on NARR radio at regular intervals, usually on the second Sunday of each month. Roya is also part of the team behind The Imaginarium, a new creative arts venue in Leeds and the founder of the Hideous Things mix series.
